We can travel to England by a ferry or through the Eurotunnel. I used both. On these occasions I have come across another usage of "portion" - my group knows what I think about - eg. "a passenger portion of a ticket".
In Canterbury, en passant, I have experienced somewhat of The Englishness, or English patriotism, a great crowd gathered to watch a parade of soldiers that had come back from Afghanistan. Soldiers were wholeheartedly cheered.
